Frederick Alderman to vote on Frederick Towne Mall rezoning in January
Frederick’s mayor and Board of Aldermen decided to move the rezoning of the Frederick Towne Mall property forward after a workshop Wednesday evening. The rezoning request is set to be approved or denied at a public hearing on Jan. 15. The mall, which has been vacant since 2013, is slated to reopen as “District 40,” a premier entertainment center with attractions such as bowling and restaurants. There is already one tenant, Warehouse Cinemas. Currently, however, the property is zoned general commercial with conditions, specifically conditions that were required for Walmart to move into the space. When Walmart backed out of the deal, the conditions remained in place. Therefore, any other space that isn’t Walmart can’t move into the space, including District 40.
@VR Brings Virtual Reality to Frederick
Virtual reality has gone from a futuristic idea to, well, a reality within the last few years. And now, it’s coming to Frederick. Shantay DeMar opened his venue @VR on the Golden Mile this past Black Friday. The location has nine stations where customers can experience virtual reality through the Vibe Pro headset. About 50 games are available to play, many of which incorporate handheld controllers and even vests that let the player feel the impacts they would in the actual game. Virtual reality is different from other video games because the player actually feels immersed in the game itself. Instead of simply watching a screen, their entire field of vision becomes the game.
Frederick Towne Mall development creates opportunities and challenges
The redevelopment of the Frederick Towne Mall on Frederick’s Golden Mile presents a chance to revitalize its neighborhood along West Patrick Street, although making the project work will depend on a variety factors, according to city officials and real estate experts. The mall’s owner wants to revitalize the site, which is to be renamed District 40, and bring in tenants that can make the site a destination for people from as far as Pennsylvania and West Virginia, said Faraz Cheema, a real estate agent at Coldwell Banker Commercial, who represents the mall’s owner, Frederick urologist Mohammed Mohiuddin. Cheema said they hope the mall’s revitalization will have a ripple effect on the surrounding neighborhood.
