Planning Commission recommend rezoning Frederick Towne Mall Site
The city of Frederick’s Planning Commission voted unanimously Tuesday night to send a positive recommendation to the mayor and Board of Aldermen to rezone the property at the former Frederick Towne Mall site. The recommended distinction would take the property from general commercial with conditions of rezoning to general commercial without conditions of rezoning. As a result of the recommendation, District 40, a recently announced project that could bring an arcade, a bowling alley and a trampoline park to the space, takes another step toward becoming a reality. Warehouse Cinemas has signed a lease to open its business on the property next summer. “With these other tenants, if we do lock them [down], it would be a huge breath of fresh air for Frederick,” Faraz Cheema, a real estate agent at Coldwell Banker Commercial, the banker attached to the project, said last week. “Instead of local residents traveling to the D.C. or Baltimore area, we really want to entertain the local residents so they don’t have to leave the city or the county.”

Go-karts, a video arcade, a bowling alley and a trampoline park could potentially be coming to the vacant Frederick Towne Mall under its new name, District 40. The project, named after U.S. 40, is expected to become a premier entertainment center. Faraz Cheema, real estate agent at Coldwell Banker Commercial, said that negotiations with potential tenants are underway, but are still in the early stages. The first tenant, Warehouse Cinemas, has signed a lease and is expected to open next summer. The theater will be about 40,000 square feet, leaving approximately 300,000 square feet left to fill.
Golden Mile Shuttle Service Set To Begin This Week
Dr. Julio Menocal will launch a trial shuttle service Friday with three stops in the neighborhoods along West Patrick Street on Golden Mile. The service will initially be limited to patients of Menocal’s medical practice on Baughman’s Lane, although he hopes to eventually expand it to other riders as well. The route will run Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., on a loop between Aldi, Boscov’s, and the Baughman’s Professional Center, where Menocal’s office is located. Menocal will initially fund the project himself.

The City of Frederick plans to extend Himes Avenue passed Butterfly Lane into the Westside Regional Park property. It will join up with Contender Way which begins in front of Butterfly Ridge Elementary School, and continue from there to Route 180.
