The Route 40 West corridor, known as the Golden Mile, has the honor of being a gateway into the City of Frederick. Its history is a rich one, rooted in the common goal for the corridor to reach its potential through reinvestment and revitalization thanks to entrepreneurs, caring community members, numerous passionate committees, and much more.
In 2001, the City of Frederick initiated a task force to address concerns of economic difficulty and reframe what Route 40 had to offer retailers. One main example of these efforts was The Golden Mile Commercial Property Tax Credit Program, aimed to offer incentive and support to rehabilitate commercial buildings for area property owners and businesses. The Golden Mile saw millions of dollars in private investment within just 18 months. Today we are known as the Golden Mile Alliance (GMA). We started as the Golden Mile Alliance Organizing Committee in 2011 appointed by Mayor Randy McClement. Through the process of transitioning into not-for-profit Maryland corporation, to electing officers and creating key committees, Golden Mile Alliance, Inc. was officially incorporated with the State of Maryland on February 16, 2012.
Since then, the Golden Mile Alliance has continued to develop in meaningful ways. We entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Frederick in 2012, officially recognizing the Golden Mile Alliance as a partner with the City in the revitalization of the Golden Mile. We are also proud of the grassroots efforts of Golden Mile businesses, residents, and property owners. So many hardworking people contribute to promote the Golden Mile as a vital, evolving, and safe economic and residential area.
