We just had to share something that we happened to come across. Last week, we had a meeting at Butterfly Ridge Elementary School to discuss how the Golden Mile Alliance can support them for the 2025 5th Grade Class graduation celebration. While we were there, we got to catch the tail end of an initiative they are doing with students. They brought in a professional rapper to assist the kids in creating a personal rap. What makes this even more unique is that the purpose of the wrap is to celebrate the student’s individual strengths and focus on that with the ultimate goal of building a strong sense of being and self-esteem. The work that our schools do to create and shape our leaders of tomorrow is heartwarming and inspiring. As many of our schools are on Spring Break this week, please take a moment to celebrate our educators and support staff for how they support our students! #goldenmile #goldenmilefrederick #goldenmilefrederickmd #goldenmilealliance #goldenmilealliancefrederickmd #frederickmaryland #frederickmd #frederickcountypublicschools #butterflyridgeelementary #SupportOurStudents #supportoureducatorsandstaff

Spring has sprung at @warehousecinemasfrdk

Yesterday evening the City of Frederick City Council approved 5 legislative district boundaries that will be represented on the City Council. The City hired a consulting firm to design two district maps that were based on population size and demographics. Once the maps were submitted, there was a public input was solicited with the unique ability to create their own maps that met population and demographic criteria. The Golden Mile district will have two representatives on the City Council from Districts 1 & 2. The City Council will be comprised of 7 members – one from each district and two at large seats. This is a truly exciting development as there will now be at least two direct representatives of the Golden Mile on the City Council. We thank the City, staff and public for their input in making this happen! #goldenmile #goldenmilefrederick #goldenmilefrederickmd#frederickmd#frederickmaryland#goldenmilealliance#goldenmilealliancefrederickmd

We regret to inform you that our Golden Mile 5K Run at Baker Park on Saturday June 25th has been postponed until later this summer. We made this difficult decision to postpone our race out of an abundance of caution for our runners, walkers and volunteers. There is construction in the area along the race route that has not yet finished and we have decided it is best for the safety of everyone involved to reschedule. We understand that this change may cause great inconvenience for you and are sincerely sorry. The circumstances are beyond our control, and please know that we will miss seeing you all this weekend! We will notify you as soon as we solidify the new date for our run! Our virtual run will still take place, so if you have registered please send us your photos, race times and let us know how you did! If you registered for our 5K and you want your Race T-Shirt now, we will have T-shirt pick up times at businesses along the Golden Mile listed on our social media page and emailed out to all participants. Should you have questions, please feel free to reach out to us at operations@goldenmilealliance.org. We thank you in advance for your patience during this time and we hope to see you all later this summer! Details coming soon…

I grew up here and experienced an amazing community! Now my business is here alongside many other incredible businesses Frederick has to offer. I want to see the Golden Mile thrive for the community members within it, and if I can help make that process a little sweeter, so be it!” When she isn’t baking delicious treats, you can find Natasha spending time with her 4 kids, hanging out with friends, trying new foods/drinks, reading a book or binge watching Netflix. GOLDEN MILE RESTAURANTS – RED HORSE STEAK HOUSE, CLAY OVEN, AND THE TACO BAR – ARE PARTICIPATING IN FREDERICK’S FIRST EVER SUMMER RESTAURANT WEEK – AUGUST 24 -30TH! Each participating restaurant will offer fixed price, multi-course menus. Each course will have at least two dishes for diners to choose from. Each restaurant sets its own price and what time of day they will serve their restaurant week menu. New this year is the added option of carry-out dining at many of the participating restaurants due to capacity restrictions on dining spaces. The exciting thing about having a summer restaurant week is all the great fresh produce that will bring fresh & bright flavors and unique opportunities for chef’s to do more creative things with their menu’s. Taco Bar owner Raul Valdivia said the restaurant will, of course, have tacos on the restaurant week menu but also plans to have some new items, including green enchiladas and a house-made flan for dessert. There will also be vegan chorizo and al pastor taco options. The restaurant will offer three courses — appetizer, entrée, and dessert — for $17. Drinks cost extra. Looks like the Golden Mile will be seeing some yummy restaurant week selections.

Great coverage of yesterday’s cleanup by FNP Columnist, Jeremy Arias: A case for volunteering and Stroke Awareness Month I hate seeing all the trash in the bushes along Rock Creek where it winds past my apartment every morning, so when I heard the Golden Mile Alliance was holding a cleanup Saturday, I was all in. Meeting in the parking lot behind the old FSK mall at 9 a.m., I joined about 30 or 40 other volunteers and traded in my notepad and pen for a pair of purple gloves and a bright yellow trash bag. By the third water bottle I found filled with a suspiciously yellow liquid, I was really missing the my old equipment, but I’d also gained a ton of respect for those gloves. For most of the time, I hung out with Ray Baker, who lives on the other side of the city, but heard about the event through his work with Comcast. While Ray has made trips out of the area to take part in similar volunteer events for Comcast Cares Day, which also fell on Saturday, he decided to stick closer to home this year. “I wanted to be a part of the community and help the community here,” Ray told me as we pushed a Home Depot shopping cart we’d found abandoned in the woods back to the event tent, filling it with bags of trash along the way. By the time we rolled up to the tent we were greeted with cheers and David Newman, president of the Golden Mile Alliance, took our picture next to the haul. I felt guilty and admitted that we hadn’t picked up all of the trash ourselves, but it was nice to be a part of the effort. Despite the labor, I had fun trudging up and down the banks with Ray, talking classic rock and handing each other fistfuls of garbage as we worked our way through thorn bushes and tip-toed along fallen tree limbs to reach plastic bags stuck out in midstream. I honestly felt like a kid again listening to Ray reminisce about getting scolded for playing in a creek near his home growing up. And I really felt like a kid again when I almost fell into the creek after a centipede crawled out of a discarded bag of Cheetos onto my hand. Occasionally we’d bump into other volunteers, including a group of young men from a local church and plenty of folks wearing blue Comcast T-shirts, but even more than people, there was trash. “I bet even when we’re done here you could have a whole other group go back through and still find plenty to pick up,” Ray told me as we made our way back to where the other volunteers were gathering under the tent. Unfortunately, he wasn’t wrong, but as daunting as it was to focus in on the amount of harm we’ve caused to this beautiful strip of nature in our city, it felt great to be a part of something positive in my neighborhood and I strongly recommend volunteering the next time you see an opportunity to help out in your neck of the woods.

Dr. Julio Menocal, whose medical practice has served the Golden Mile area residents for many years, was honored Wednesday night with the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award by Rotary Club of Carroll Creek . Please stay ALERT and AWARE Frederick Police Request Public’s Assistance – Skimming Device Found FREDERICK, MD – The Frederick Police Department is looking for the public’s assistance in identifying a person who may have witnessed a skimming device being placed on an ATM machine at the Weis grocery store located on Old Camp Road in Frederick on December 28, 2017, at approximately 7:30 pm. The Frederick Police Department is asking anyone who can identify the person in the photograph or have additional information, in this case, to contact Detective Forrest at 301-748-7122 referencing Case # 17-108638. Callers may also remain anonymous and contact the Frederick Police Department’s Crime Tip Line at 301-600-TIPS (8477), send information via email to fpdcrimetip@frederickmdpolice.org or send a text to 240-674-TIPS (8477). If anyone used the ATM located inside the Weis grocery store on Old Camp Road between December 28th and 29th, it is recommended that you contact your bank and cancel your card. Below are some suggestions on how to protect yourself from becoming a victim. A credit/debit card skimming device is a small electronic device that can be attached or inserted into a fuel dispenser or ATM. The device secretly records information from the credit/debit card transmitting it through Bluetooth wireless technology. The criminal is able to then download the information remotely from a nearby location. HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF 1. Choose gas pumps or ATM’s in high traffic areas and those that are visible to the clerk and cameras. Avoid gas pumps that are on the outside of the “visible” area. 2. Wiggle everything – an ATM or gas pump card reader does not have loose parts. If something moves do not use the machine. 3. Check for tampering – before putting your card into the reader check the machine for any abnormalities. Many gas pumps now have security stickers on them. If the seal is broken report it immediately. 4. Shield your pin number when entering it. 5. Try to use ATM machines located in a trusted location such as a bank. Avoid standalone machines when possible. If you suspect a device has been tampered with please report it to the business and the police immediately.

At the Golden Mile Alliance’s Board meeting on Tuesday evening, February 17th, the Alliance presented Lissette Colon, President of the Hillcrest Elementary PTA, with 200 ponchos for the school’s students. Hillcrest Elementary, being one of the schools in the county operating over capacity, has a large number of students who have classes in portables outside of the main building. When these students need to go inside to the main building for any reason and there is bad weather they have no choice but to brave the elements. When the Golden Mile Alliance found out that the PTA was trying to supply the students with ponchos to help keep students dry during their trips to and from the building when it was raining, the Board decided that the organization would provide the ponchos. Working with Jessica Underwood of JR Capital Real Estate, the Golden Mile Alliance was able to secure 200 ponchos for Hillcrest Elementary students.

From the Frederick News Post today: POLICE SUPPLY STORE OPENS ON THE GOLDEN MILE By ED WATERS JR. News-Post Staff ewaters@newspost.com After more than 25 years in law enforcement, Dave Deanovich has decided to open a store to supply police as well as civilians with equipment. Deanovich, his wife, Michelle, and Rob Shafer are partners in Spartan Tactical and Police Supply in the Stonegate Center on the Golden Mile stretch of U.S. 40. Deanovich worked in law enforcement with the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs and more recently was a detective sergeant and an investigator with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office. Traveling around Maryland, Deanovich said he found few places to buy equipment and decided to open his own business. He and his wife have owned Deanovich and Associates, providing private security services, for several years. “Police officers had to order things online or drive out of the area to find a store that sold what they needed,” Deanovich said in an interview at his store. “Police like to see things, touch them, not just order something online that might not be right and have to ship it back,” Deanovich said. The shop sells equipment by Amchar and Kroll, among others. “We deal with Americanmade, and especially veteranowned companies,” Deanovich said. Personal service is emphasized, Deanovich said. “No one else in the fivecounty area carries exactly what we do,” Deanovich said. “We only see quality products.” The shop has cases for weapons and equipment, knives, flashlights, Woolrich and other apparel brands. “It’s in my family. I had relatives who were in law enforcement,” Deanovich said. Shafer doesn’t have law enforcement experience, but he is familiar with the equipment and has worked with the Deanoviches’ security firm providing protection for clients. Deanovich is a certified Maryland firearms instructor and will offer training in handgun safety and concealed carry handgun laws. A grand opening is set at the store Saturday.

WOLF FURNITURE MAKES DONATION TO THE GOLDEN MILE ALLIANCE, FREDERICK, MD — The Golden Mile Alliance received a $1,000 donation from Wolf Furniture to assist the organization in its ongoing efforts to revitalize the Golden Mile. The money came from Wolf Furniture’s Annual Gold Tournament at which they raise funds to donate to various organizations. David Dumm, Manager of the Wolf Furniture at 1215 West Patrick Street off the Golden Mile, was at the GMA’s January Board Meeting to present that organization with the check. “Wolf’s support means a great deal,” said Justin M. Kiska, the President of the Golden Mile Alliance. “They are one of the largest retailers here on Route 40 and have been supportive of the GMA since it was first created.” The Golden Mile Alliance is an independent organization, founded in partnership with the City of Frederick, to promote and foster a vibrant and safe Golden Mile gateway community through business, neighborhood and economic development activities. Its vision is to ensure that the Golden Mile is an attractive, diverse, and highly dynamic, mixed-use commercial corridor with top retail, office, and service uses linked by safe pedestrian routes to healthy residential neighborhoods and parks. The Board of Directors holds open meets once a month on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Meetings are held at the City of Frederick’s Municipal Annex at 140 West Patrick Street, as well as various locations along Route 40. To learn more about the Golden Mile Alliance, visit its website at www.GoldenMileAlliance.org.

From Frederick County Dept. of Emergency Mgmt about upcoming weather: A cold, high pressure system is currently the dominant weather feature for our area. This is likely to persist through late Tuesday, before a coastal low pressure system moves northeast from Gulf Coast and passes off the Carolina coast. The confidence in the storm forming as a coastal event is good, the exact track is low confidence at this point. The take-away should be to prepare now for a potentially high-impact event Wednesday into Thursday, which could be followed by a fast-moving, “ Alberta clipper” type storm on Friday into Saturday. NWS Sterling, VA Forecast § Today Mostly sunny, with a high near 28. Northwest wind 8 to 10 mph. § Tonight Mostly clear, with a low around 9. Northwest wind around 7 mph. § Tuesday Sunny, with a high near 25. Northwest wind around 6 mph. § Tuesday Night Clear, with a low around 5. Chance of precipitation is 30%. § Wednesday Night Snow likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 25. Chance of precipitation is 70%. § Thursday Snow likely before noon, then a chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 36. Chance of precipitation is 70%. § Thursday Night A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 23.
