For those looking for healthful Asian food, Modern Asia offers many choices. Owner Roy Zou and partner Jian Ye have opened Modern Asia at 1306 W. Patrick St., in the Golden Mile Marketplace.

“We have healthy, quality food, fresh ingredients,” Zou said. “It is totally different Asian.”
Traditional Asian dishes are available, but Zou said the restaurant uses less oil and sugar in preparing meals.

The restaurant offers Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese dishes. Modern Asia is a menu restaurant, not a buffet.

Zou said he and Ye have about 13 years of experience each and had worked together at other restaurants and decided they wanted to open their own place.

He has four employees now, but he expects to hire more after the soft opening of the restaurant.

“We hire local and buy local produce and other things,” Zou said. “We want to spend our money locally.”

He is looking for feedback from customers about what menu items they like or may like to see added.

Some of the items Zou said should be popular include mango shrimp and mango chicken. The menu includes noodle dishes, pho, curry and vegetarian choices.

A list called “healthy corner” includes steam mix vegetables in garlic olive oil; steamed broccoli in garlic olive oil and steamed string bean in garlic olive oil, each served with brown rice for $7.95.

Some of the other menu items include honey roast pork or fried oysters among appetizers; chicken corn soup and other soups; Vietnamese bun or drunken noodles; lamb chops; mango mousse and smoothies in choices such as avocado and mango.
